Resolution Approving the City of Hampton, Virginia's Receiving OG Grant Funds from the Office of the Attorney General to Facilitate a Youth Camp Program to be held in August of 2016.

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

The Virginia Office Of The Attorney General has awarded a onetime sum of $5000.00 to fund a “Virginia Rules Camp” program for local youth to interact with Law Enforcement and other city departments.

Discussion:

The total funding for this grant project is $5,000.00 with no match required.  The City of Hampton’s Police Department, Parks Recreation and Leisure Services, and Youth Violence Prevention (The Collaborative) will share planning and implementation responsibilities for this camp. The Hampton Police Department will serve as the lead agency for this grant, and have developed curriculum modules, identified facilitators, recruited officers to volunteer to support the program. Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services will plan all recreation activities, facility usage, provide staffing support, and register program participants. Youth Violence Prevention will develop applications for students, provide some meals and snacks for the program, and assist with marketing efforts.

Twenty five middle school and twenty five high school students from the City of Hampton will participate in the camp. The ages of the participants will range from 12-18 years old. Students will remain with students who are at the same level of education during the camp. This will allow the facilitation of modules that are more relevant for their group.

The City of Hampton’s internal marketing department will partner in this endeavor to make the community at large aware of this opportunity. Paper applications will be available for pick up at community centers, libraries, and applications can be submitted online. Hampton City Schools, Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Human Services, faith based organizations, and local athletic associations will be made aware of the camp.

The first applications will be accepted for consideration. Staff from Hampton Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Services, Police Department, Youth Violence Prevention Division will meet to review applications and select camp participants.

Impact:

The camp program will allow for positive interactions between Law Enforcement and young citizens while building toward better future relations.  The program will equally create a safe environment for the participants to enjoy summer activities.
