Pass the resolution in recognition of Mayor George E. Wallace
Body
WHEREAS, Virginia native, George E. Wallace, was reared in the City of Williamsburg, Virginia;
WHEREAS, he graduated from North Carolina Central University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and later obtained a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Golden Gate University;
WHEREAS, he received Executive Management Certificates from Harvard University and The Federal Executive Institute;
WHEREAS, Mr. Wallace served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged after his duty commitment;
WHEREAS, early in his career, Mr. Wallace served as Deputy Director of the Office of Human Affairs (OHA) in the City of Newport News and as the Executive Director of the Southeast Tidewater Area Manpower Planning Authority for the City of Norfolk;
WHEREAS, Mr. Wallace had an extensive career with the City of Hampton serving from 1975-2005 in positions including Assistant Manager for Community Services, Assistant City Manager for Strategic Planning and Economic Development, and City Manager;
WHEREAS, Mr. Wallace began his political career as an elected member of the Hampton City Council in 2008;
WHEREAS, since that time, he served as Hampton’s Vice Mayor and Mayor;
WHEREAS, while serving as Mayor, Vice Mayor, and Council Member, Mr. Wallace was a member of numerous boards and commissions including the Virginia Municipal League, the Office of Human Affairs, Virginia First Cities, Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO), Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC), Hampton Roads Air Quality Committee (HRAQC), the Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities, Peninsula Mayors and Chairs, Hampton Roads Mayors and Chairs, the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance (HRMFFA), Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission (HRTAC), and the Peninsula Airport Commission;
WHEREAS, over the years, Mayor Wallace was affiliated with many service and civic groups including 100 Black Men of the Virginia Peninsula, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the American Society for Public Administration, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Hampton Roads, the Hampton Rotary Club (a Paul Harris Fellow), the International City Management Association, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity Inc., and First Baptist Church King Street;
WHEREAS, Mayor Wallace has demonstrated leadership to our community for many years in many capacities and has served as a role model for our youth;
WHEREAS, Mayor Wallace and his wife, Mary, are the proud parents of three adult sons: Eric, Jason and Damon who have blessed them with three grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, the couple continues to be proud residents of the City of Hampton, Virginia.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, that George E. Wallace be, and hereby is, recognized and shall be presented with the Distinguished Citizen Award for his commitment to the City of Hampton.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the September 14, 2016, City Council meeting of the City of Hampton, Virginia, and that an appropriate copy be signed by the Mayor, attested by the Clerk, and presented to George E. Wallace.
