Resolution to Establish the Hampton VA 250 Committee as a Hampton City Council Appointed Committee

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

Hampton City Council is dedicated to the furtherance of economic development and tourism in the City of Hampton. The Virginia America 250 Commission (VA250) was created in 2020 by the General Assembly for the purpose of preparing for and commemorating the 250th anniversary of Virginia’s participation in American independence. VA250 has requested that each locality form a committee to aid in planning for the commemoration period.

 

Discussion:

 

The Hampton VA250 Committee will work to ensure all initiatives are developed in coordination with the VA250 Commission and are representative of Hampton's cultural diversity, history, and unique assets.

 

Impact:

 

The Committee will develop programs that engage residents and attract visitors, generating positive partnerships and providing economic opportunities for Hampton.

It is Staff's recommendation that Hampton City Council establish the Hampton VA250 Committee.

 

Body

                     WHEREAS, the Virginia America 250 Commission (VA250) was created in 2020 by the General Assembly for the purpose of preparing for and commemorating the 250th anniversary of Virginia’s participation in American independence;

 

                     WHEREAS, VA250 has requested that each locality form a committee to aid in planning for the commemoration period; and

 

                     WHEREAS, the Hampton City Council deems it advisable to appoint a local VA250 committee, the Hampton VA250 Committee, to serve in this role and plan and coordinate programs to occur within the City of Hampton in commemoration of 250 years and to communicate regularly with the Commonwealth’s VA250;

 

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Hampton City Council does hereby establish the Hampton VA250 Committee that shall consist of twenty (20) Hampton residents and Hampton organization and business representatives who shall serve without compensation and shall serve until the Commemoration ceremonies have concluded.

 

1.                     Appointments:  The individuals appointed to this working committee shall have the knowledge and abilities required to advise, implement plans, and actively contribute to the successful execution of Hampton VA250 events, programs, and commemorations. The members of the Hampton VA250 Committee shall be appointed by Hampton City Council.

 

2.                     Meetings:  The Hampton VA250 Committee shall meet, at a minimum, on a monthly basis with the Directors of the Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau and Hampton History Museum.

 

3.                     Duties of the Hampton VA250 Committee: Develop strategic plans for programs and events that are meaningful, relevant, and appealing to Hampton citizens and visitors, and that commemorate the 250th anniversary, working collaboratively with City staff to execute and promote the planned activities.

 

4.                     Minutes:  The Director of the Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau shall cause minutes of the Committee meetings to be recorded.

 

5.                     Duration and Term:  The Hampton VA250 Committee created hereby shall complete and conclude its business no later than 5 p.m. on October 31, 2026.
