Resolution Naming the Football Field Located in the Y.H. Thomas Community Center in Honor of Irvin Braxton, a Founder of the Y.H. Thomas Athletic Association and Ratifying Previous Namings at Y.H. Thomas Community Center

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

City Council was asked to honor Irvin Braxton with the renaming of the Y.H. Thomas football field. Because Irvin Braxton was a founder of the Y.H. Thomas Athletic Association and the coalition that founded the Y.H. Community Center, and a distinguished athlete, it was suggested that the naming of the Y.H. Thomas football field be in his honor. This request was brought forward by the Y.H. Thomas Athletic Association and the Y.H. Thomas Community Center. Therefore, Council is asked to adopt the attached resolution doing so.

 

This resolution also ratifies previous namings which have taken place over the years at Y.H. Thomas Community Center to provide an accurate record of these actions.

 

 

Discussion:

 

It honors the lifetime contributions of Mr. Irvin Braxton and memorializes them for the community. 

 

Impact:

 

Honors Irvin Braxton's lifetime contributions to Y.H. Thomas and the neighboring community.

It is recommended that City Council approves the Resolution which also ratifies past namings at Y.H. Thomas Community Center

 

Body

                     WHEREAS, the City of Hampton has an established community center at Y.H. Thomas, and a strong community asset in the Y.H. Thomas Athletic Association;

 

                      WHEREAS, the Y.H. Thomas Community Center and the Y.H. Thomas Athletic Association have requested the football field be named in honor of Irvin Braxton;

 

WHEREAS, Irvin Braxton was an outstanding athlete at, and graduate of, Bethel High School in Hampton, Virginia;

 

                     WHEREAS, Irvin Braxton was an original founder, commissioner, and head coach of the Y.H. Thomas Athletic Association, and part of the coalition that founded the Y.H. Thomas Community Center; and

 

                      WHEREAS, several of the assets at the Y.H. Thomas Community Center have been previously  named for prominent citizens with a connection to the Center, including: the Mary Christian Trail at Y.H. Thomas Park; Leroy Crosby baseball field at Y. H. Thomas Park; Pervis Tillery Gymnasium at Y.H. Thomas Community Center; Valerie Barnes Community room at Y.H. Thomas Community Center; and Will Moffett Trail Blazers Wall at Y.H. Thomas Community Center and City Council wishes to ratify those past actions;

 

                      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia that the previous assets named at Y.H. Thomas listed above be ratified and affirmed and, additionally, the football field at the Y.H. Thomas Community Center be the permanent public site to honor Irvin Braxton by naming it "The Irvin Braxton Field."
