Resolution Renaming a Portion of Butler Farm Road and a Portion of Thomas Nelson Drive to College Drive
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
Virginia Peninsula Community College (the “College”) has requested that the City of Hampton (the “City”) rename to “College Drive” a portion of Butler Farm Road and a portion of Thomas Nelson Drive starting at the eastern property line of 600 Butler Farm Road (LRSN 7001872) and running west to the intersection of Hastings Drive and Thomas Nelson Drive (the proposed “College Drive”), as illustrated on that certain exhibit attached to this Resolution entitled, “Exhibit Denoting the Proposed Renaming of a Portion of Butler Farm Road and Thomas Nelson Drive to College Drive” (the “Exhibit”). The portions of Butler Farm Road and of Thomas Nelson Drive requested to be changed are immediately adjacent to properties owned by the College, and no other properties are affected, because there are no non-College owned properties fronting the proposed College Drive, and no property addresses will need to be changed except for the College’s addresses.
On July 1, 2021, Thomas Nelson Community College changed its name to Virginia Peninsula Community College. Updating the mailing address for the College is the final step in removing the “Thomas Nelson” name from the College’s identity. The State Board of Community Colleges has given their support for the requested street name change.

WHEREAS, the State Board of Community Colleges has given their support to the College for the requested street name change; and
WHEREAS, the College will reimburse the City for the costs associated with the fabrication and installation of any new signs required.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia that the certain portions of Butler Farm Road and Thomas Nelson Drive starting at the eastern property line of 600 Butler Farm Road (LRSN 7001872) and running west to the intersection of Hastings Drive and Thomas Nelson Drive as illustrated on that certain Exhibit attached to this Resolution is hereby renamed "College Drive" effective sixty (60) days after the date of this Resolution as required by City policy.
The Clerk of the Council is hereby directed to forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Clerk of the Circuit Court pursuant to Virginia Code section 15.2-2019.
