Resolution in Recognition of Charlie W. Hill

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

This is a resolution honoring Charlie W. Hill's work for the City of Hampton. He is being honored with a Distinguished Citizens Medal.

Body

 

                     WHEREAS, Charlie Hill earned a Master of Business Administration from Hampton University and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Virginia State College;

 

                     WHEREAS, he is the co-founder and President of the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum, is a founding board member of the Community Free Clinic of Newport News, Virginia, and has funded an endowment for the Hill Leadership Institute at Virginia State University;

 

                     WHEREAS, he served two three-year terms as a Trustee of the Virginia Health Care Foundation, a State-wide public-private organization that funds free clinics and federally qualified health centers around the State;

 

                     WHEREAS, he was a member of the MMHI delegation to the White House Dialogue on Men’s Health which evolved from President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Task Force;

 

                     WHEREAS, he has been an active board member on local, regional, state and international civic and business groups including: the Planning Council, the Downtown Norfolk Council, the Virginia Air and Space Museum, the Virginia Stage Company, the Crispus Attucks Cultural Center (CACC), the Corporate Advisory Board of Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia, the INROADS Mid-Atlantic Regional Board of Directors, and the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Advisory Council of Hampton Roads, Virginia;

 

                     WHEREAS, he is a Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities Humanitarian Award Honoree and was awarded the Honorary Associate Degree of Humane Letters from Thomas Nelson Community College;

 

                     WHEREAS, he and his wife, Golden Bethune-Hill, were selected Citizens of the Year by the Daily Press;

 

                     WHEREAS, Mr. Hill is a member of the Virginia Peninsula Chapter of the 100 Black Men of America (BMOA), International Chair of the 100 BMOA’s Prostate Cancer Initiative, and Vice-Chair of the International 100 BMOA’s Health and Wellness Committee;

 

                     WHEREAS, he is a life member of the NAACP, a member of the National Association of Minorities in the Cable Hall of Fame, and has been a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. for more than 50 years;

 

                     WHEREAS, Mr. Hill was appointed to the Virginia State University Board of Visitors by Governor Terry McAuliffe;

 

                     WHEREAS, he has served as a Trustee and an elder at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church;

 

                     WHEREAS, Mr. Hill retired as Executive Vice President of Human Resources of Landmark Media Enterprises with more than 40 years of progressive leadership and managerial experience in telecommunications, business services, shipbuilding, and chemical and media industries; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Mr. Hill has made many contributions to the City of Hampton and the Hampton Roads Region through his community service endeavors, and has generously given his time and talents to many throughout the community.

 

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, that Charlie W. Hill be, and hereby is, recognized and shall be presented with the Distinguished Citizen Award for his commitment to the City of Hampton.

 

                     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the April 27, 2016, City Council meeting of the City of Hampton, Virginia, and that an appropriate copy be signed by the Mayor, attested by the Clerk, and presented to Charlie W. Hill.
