Resolution to Amend the FY 2023 Council Approved Budget to Accept and Appropriate an Unconditional  $10,000.00 Gift from the United Steelworkers Local 8888 to be used by the City of Hampton's Department of Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services to Support the Operation and Maintenance of the Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center, Pursuant to City Code § 2-134

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

The United Steelworkers Local 8888 is making an unconditional donation of funds to the Department of Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services to support the operation and maintenance of the Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center.

Impact:

 

The financial impact increases the City Budget by the $10,000.00 donation.  This gift relates to City Council's Strategic Priorities by generating resources to create vibrant and authentic places for the community that reflect and celebrate culture, history and character. The direct impact of the donation is that it will support the operation and maintenance of the Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center.

                     WHEREAS, the United Steelworkers Local 8888 believes that community outreach plays an important role in changing the lives of community members and wants to assist in supporting the programs and events developed by the Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center that help improve learning, promote civic engagement, and strengthen the Olde Hampton neighborhood;

 

                     WHEREAS, the United Steelworkers Local 8888 has generously agreed to make an unconditional donation of $10,000.00 to be used by the City of Hampton's Department of Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services to support the operation and maintenance of the Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center; and

 

            WHEREAS, acceptance of such donations by the City of Hampton, pursuant to Hampton City Code § 2-134, requires the approval of the Hampton City Council to the extent the amount or value of such gifts or donations is $5,000.00 or greater, and the City Manager seeks that approval, submitting that acceptance is in the best interest of the City.

 

             NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia hereby amends its Fiscal Year 2023 Council Approved Budget to (1) accept an unconditional $10,000.00 gift from the United Steelworkers Local 8888 to be used by the Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services for the operation and maintenance of the Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center; and (2) appropriate that $10,000.00 to the Department of Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services Department Operating Budget from Restricted Fund Balance to be used for that purpose, as authorized by City Code § 2-134. The conditions pertaining to this donation will be recorded in the City Council minutes as set forth in City Code § 2-134(a).

 

              BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia authorizes the City Manager, or her designee, to take any and all actions necessary to implement this gift.
