Briefing on the Poverty Study & Family Resilience and Economic Empowerment

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

The briefing will provide an update on the City Council's strategic priority of Family Resilience and Economic Empowerment. The briefing will consist of three presentations. The first presentation will be presented by MGT Consulting and will detail the findings of their poverty study. The poverty study will be utilized to inform the work plan in this strategic priority area. The second presentation will be from the City's Department of Economic Development and will highlight the work of the department to support individuals in their journey towards economic independence. The third presentation will be from the City's Department of Human Services and will examine the department's current efforts in this arena, as well as highlight some of the opportunities and challenges that exist in our efforts to improve in the area of Family Resilience and Economic Empowerment.

 

Discussion:

 

Family Resilience and Economic Empowerment is the City Council's strategic priority focused on "Addressing poverty in ways that support families and individuals." The goal is to provide every resident in the City of Hampton with an opportunity to reach their full potential. The vision is to move individuals and families from financial dependence to financial empowerment and self-sufficiency. The poverty study is one of the sources of information that will be utilized to inform the City's implementation plan to advance this strategic priority area. the work of supporting families and individuals to move from poverty to financial independence requires a multifaceted approach. It involves many governmental and non-governmental strategic partners and stakeholders. The City's Economic Development and Human Services departments will present on their current efforts and identify some of the challenges and opportunities that will need to be addressed to advance our efforts.
