Resolution to Amend the FY 2024 Council Approved Budget to Accept a $12,000 donation from Dr. Helen Rountree and Appropriate such Funds from the General Fund's Unassigned Fund Balance to the Public Library's Operating Budget to Purchase New Microfilm Equipment for the Special Collections Department (Special Collections/Virginiana Room)

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

Dr. Helen Rountree, a longtime patron of the Hampton Public Library ("the Library"), was working with staff in the Library's Special Collections Department.  In recognition of the need for new equipment, Dr. Rountree would like to donate $12,000 to the Library to be used for the purchase of a new microfilm reader, which customers will be able to use well into the future.

Pursuant to City Code Section 2-134(a), monetary gifts over $5,000, as aggregated or as a whole, require approval and appropriation by City Council.  The action presented to City Council, by way of this resolution, requests the acceptance and appropriation of Dr. Rountree's donation of $12,000 for the purchase of new microfilm equipment for the Public Library's Special Collections/Virginiana Room.

 

Impact:

This gift will provide a modern microfilm reader for customers to have access to historical documents, newspapers, and photos that are not available in any other format.

Body

                     WHEREAS, Dr. Helen Rountree, a longtime patron of the Hampton Public Library ("the Library"), recognized the need for new equipment in the Library's Special Collections Department;

 

                     WHEREAS, Dr. Helen Rountree generously donated $12,000 for the purchase of new microfilm equipment for the Library's Special Collections/Virginiana Room; and

 

                     WHEREAS, new equipment will allow customers to have access to historical documents, newspapers, and photos that are not available in any other format.

 

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia hereby amends the FY 2024 Council Approved Budget to (1) accept the $12,000 monetary donation from Dr. Helen Rountree; and (2) appropriate such funds from the General Fund's Unassigned Fund Balance to the Public Library's Operating Budget for the purchase of new microfilm equipment for the Special Collections/Virginiana Room. 

 

                     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council authorizes the City Manager, or her designee, to take any and all actions necessary to implement this donation.
