Title

Briefing on the Bloomberg Harvard Gun Violence Reduction Initiative; an Update on the Office of Youth & Young Adult Opportunities; and an Overview of the Positive Summer Youth Engagement Opportunities in the City

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

The first section of the briefing is an update on the progress of the gun violence reduction initiative, "Hopeful Hampton", which resulted from the city's participation in the Bloomberg Harvard Cities Leadership Initiative. The briefing will address the process utilized by the multidisciplinary team of stakeholders to define the problem and discuss the strategies and tactics it is utilizing to reduce gun violence in the city.  The second portion of the presentation will be a comprehensive update on the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities.  This update will cover the structure of the office, its work in the community, partnerships, programming, grant opportunities, metrics, outcomes, and recommendations.  The third and final section of the briefing will provide an overview of various positive youth engagement opportunities that were available to young people in our community this summer.  The presentation is not exhaustive, but it will highlight opportunities provided by the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services (PRLS), Healthy Families, and Public Libraries.

Discussion:

The Safe and Clean Initiative operates under the belief that every person in the city of Hampton deserves to live in a neighborhood and residence that is safe, clean and provides an environment where that individual can reach their full potential. This presentation will highlight the efforts of Hopeful Hampton, the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities, and our youth serving departments to make that core belief a reality.
