Purpose
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) awarded Hampton Division of Fire & Rescue (HDFR) $173,514 (90%) with a match of $17,351 (10%) from HDFR. The purpose of this grant is to protect the health and safety of the public and firefightihg personnel against fire and fire-related hazards.HDFR requested funds to provide a mandatory, non-punitive, occupational wellness and fitness initiative for all uniformed career and volunteer fire and EMS personnel. The goal is to certify 25-32 of our personnel as Peer Fitness Trainers and 6 of those will be certified as Senior Peer Fitness Trainers. The grant will support funding to backfill positions while they attend the train-the-trainer courses. It will provide course materials, fitness kits and manuals to those Peer Fitness Trainers and Senior Trainers. A portion of the funding to allow HDFR to provide commercial grade exercise equipment at each of our 11 fire stations for members to use. Members will be trained by the Senior Peer Fitness Trainers on how to use the equipment.

Last month, council approved our resolution (File Number: 16-0015) Sole Source to use the IAFF/IAFC/ACE Peer Fitness Trainer Certification Program which is a health and wellness program geared specifically to firefighters. Council also approved two Sole Source vendors of the specially made pieces of equipment; ADF Steel, Inc. (File Number: 16-0122) and ALCO Machine, Inc. (File Number: 16-0121).
