Approval of City's 2017 General Assembly Priorities

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

This item is in follow-up to the briefing on the proposed 2017 Legislative Agenda for the City provided to Council on October 26, 2016, by Laura Bateman of Bateman Consulting LLC, on behalf of the City Manager.  This Agenda has been revised pursuant to comments received from Council members.  Formal Council approval is requested before those matters are presented to legislators.

Discussion:

The City annually prepares and submits to Virginia’s General Assembly a package setting forth requests for new laws, revisions to laws, appropriations, and other similar matters for which legislative action is necessary.  The City’s requests reflect cumulative concerns of the City Council, the City Manager, and the citizens of the City.    The package includes several City-specific requests, as well as multiple policy statements regarding regional and statewide matters.   The City’s lobbyist, Bateman Consulting, LLC, will solicit patrons for each of the City specific requests and will monitor the progress of the City’s requests, as well as all other matters considered by the General Assembly that may affect the City.
