Resolution Approving the City of Hampton, Virginia's Participation in and Appropriation of the FY17 Highway Safety (DMV) Grant {Selective Enforcement - Speed} through the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

The FY17 Highway Safety (DMV) Grant pays officer overtime for selective enforcement activities related to speeding violations. The grant will also pay for three new Lidar units to be used by the Police Division.

 

Discussion:

The community benefits through the increased traffic safety from added patrols and enforcement.  There is a soft, in-kind match required for this grant project.  The match will consist of the funds and resources that go into the fuel and maintenance of the vehicles used for these patrols.

 

Impact:

This project provides a considerable addition to highway safety for the citizens of Hampton and does so at a minimal cost as the bulk of the project is provided for by the State.

WHEREAS, the City of Hampton, Virginia has been awarded the FY17 Highway Safety Grant in the amount of $49,750 in federal funds with $24,875 as an in-kind match from the Police Division’s operating budget for a total award of $74,625; and

 

WHEREAS, the grant award covers the period 10/01/2016 through 09/30/2017. 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia accepts and appropriates the FY17 Highway Safety (DMV) Grant {Selective Enforcement - Speed} as awarded/made by the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Motor Vehicles Department, and any supplemental funding, in accordance with the grant agreement. 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council authorizes the City Manager, or her designee, to take the necessary steps to implement this grant award.
