Title

Hampton Public Art Initiative Briefing

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

In an effort to encourage more public art throughout the city, City Council has allocated funding to support public art projects beginning in FY2024. The Commission on the Arts is working to finalize a process for solicited public art projects to guide these efforts. In the interim, staff are working with the Commission’s Public Art Sub-Committee to develop specific recommendations related to project locations and thematic direction. While the Commission continues to finalize its process, staff recommends using a portion of the available funds appropriated for this purpose to move forward and jumpstart the program by initiating two to three highly visible and impactful projects that have the support of City Council. This approach allows momentum to build and processes to be tested while laying the groundwork for a more structured long-term effort.

Discussion:

Discussion will include the selection two to three projects to help jumpstart the public art initiative while the Hampton Commission on the Arts continues to refine its recommendations. The presentation will include specific project proposals, along with an opportunity for City Council to suggest additional projects or other approaches for moving the initiative forward.

Impact:

Expanding public art projects aligns with the Place Making Strategic Priority and helps foster a fun, vibrant, and creative community.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends that City Council select two to three projects to help jumpstart the public art initiative while the Hampton Commission on the Arts continues to refine its recommendations.
