Title
Public Art Program Briefing
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
The Hampton Commission on the Arts will present its recommendations on the proposed theme and location for the inaugural public art program projects. In support of expanding public art citywide, City Council allocated funding beginning in FY2024, including an initial appropriation and an ongoing commitment of $100,000 annually through the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). To date, $250,000 is available to support these projects.
The public art program is designed to enliven public spaces, offering residents and visitors opportunities to experience artworks that inspire imagination, foster creativity, and strengthen the city’s cultural identity. The program also seeks to advance creative placemaking, enhancing the character and vibrancy of the community.
Earlier this year, the Hampton Commission on the Arts established a formal process for soliciting public art proposals to guide implementation. Over the summer, the Commission developed a recommendation on both the thematic focus and potential locations for projects. At its September meeting, the Commission voted to forward this recommendation to City Council for consideration. If City Council supports the recommendation, the Commission will coordinate with City staff to initiate a Request for Proposals (RFP), with the goal of completing the selected public art projects by Spring 2026.
Discussion:
City Council is asked to consider the Hampton Commission on the Arts’ recommendation for the inaugural public art projects and share any guidance and feedback on moving forward with the Request for Proposals (RFP).
Impact:
Expanding public art projects aligns with the Place Making Strategic Priority and helps foster a fun, vibrant, and creative community.
Recommendation:
Rec
Staff recommends that City Council support the Hampton Commission on the Arts proposal for public art theming and locations.
