Ordinance to Amend and Reenact Chapter 12, Article III Entitled “Precinct Voting Places” of the Code of the City of Hampton, Virginia, By Amending Section 12-84 Entitled “East Hampton precinct."
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
The Electoral Board requests to relocate the polling place at East Hampton precinct to Phoebus High School. The current polling place is located at the Woodlands Golf Course, 9 Woodland Road. The Electoral Board is concerned with safety and congestion in the Woodlands Golf Course due to the limited space to move about within the voting area, specifically during Presidential elections.
The Woodlands Golf Course was so congested in the 2008 and 2012 Presidential elections that the golf course manager had to close the facility to the golfers. There were 2054 voters in November 2008 and 2328 voters in November 2012 who came to cast their votes. Due to the insufficient amount of space available inside the precinct, the line of voters wrapped around the parking lot and down Woodland Road.
There are currently 3443 registered voters in East Hampton’s precinct and this number is likely to rise due to the newly opened Woodlands of Phoebus retirement complex. To prevent the mass congestion, confusion, and long lines in future elections, the Electoral Board requests to move the polling place to Phoebus High School, 100 Ireland Street, which easily can accommodate such a large number of voters.
