Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion FY2023 Annual Report and Departmental Overview
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion will be presenting an overview of their department and their activities over the last fiscal year.
Discussion:
In 1995, the Hampton City Council appointed a group of citizens to look at diversity issues within the City. After serving as the Executive Director of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for nearly 2 years, my focus has been to diligently increase citizen engagement and visibility within the community and amongst our professional colleagues (internal and external) to ensure that Hampton will continue to be a city that is welcoming, supportive and inclusive of all citizens, concerning race, color, religion, age, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity.
By way of this update, I have identified ways in which the department is supporting the City Strategic Vision and Council Priorities to educate and engage citizenry in informal education that attracts and develops citizens who will have a positive impact on their community and be able to succeed in the global economy in result of department trainings and programs. The mission of the department is to promote the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion through programs and events that create and increase opportunities for communities to learn and grow together. We ensure fair and impartial access to better social and environmental outcomes in the City of Hampton. By partnering with community members and stakeholders, two citizen-based commissions, a youth advisory group, and internal staff, we provide proactive and reactive support to accomplish the City's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (D.E.I.) strategic goals, and commitments.
