Title

Briefing on options for possible animal control ordinance amendments

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

City Council requested that the Animal Control Advisory Committee examine whether a need or desire exists to amend the current ordinance that addresses dogs at large to require a more strict "leash law".  In addition, the Animal Control Advisory Committee was also asked to examine whether the code should be amended to address a limit on the number of dogs and cats that should be allowed at a residence.  In addition to the suggestions from the Animal Control Advisory Committee, Council also requested some community outreach on these issues to receive input from the public.  Today's briefing will provide Council with information on the results of the community outreach, the options as it relates to both issues, the pros, cons, and legal issues associated with the different options, the Animal Control Advisory Committee's recommendations and staff's recommendations.  This is an informational briefing, if Council decides to make changes to the animal control ordinances that will take place at a future Council meeting.
