Resolution to Appropriate Three Hundred Twenty Five Thousand Dollars ($325,000) from Committed Fund Balance - Departmental Savings to the Capital Budget for Public Works Engineering to Fund the City Council Chamber Renovations
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
The City Council Chambers has not been renovated since City Hall opened in 1976.
Discussion:
The citizen seating in the Council Chambers is old and beginning to fail. Electrical and information technology cords are currently taped down to the floor or exposed. The lighting is difficult for the Facilities Maintenance staff to maintain due to its design. The carpet is worn and stained. The Clerk of Council does not have a professional station from which to perform her duties during City Council meetings. These issues need to be addressed to improve the functionality and safety of the Council Chambers.
Impact:
Staff presented a plan at the November 9, 2016, Council meeting to address these issues at the cost of $325,000.

WHEREAS the City Council Chambers has not been renovated since City Hall opened in 1976;
WHEREAS the City Council was presented a plan at their November 9, 2016, meeting for renovating the City Council Chambers;
WHEREAS this plan includes replacing the citizen seating; re-carpeting; installing a false floor to secure electrical cords; replacing lighting and other improvements to address basic functionality and safety issues throughout the City Council Chambers, and
WHEREAS the cost of renovating the City Council Chambers is $325,000.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Hampton authorizes the appropriation of Three Hundred Twenty Five Thousand Dollars ($325,000) from Committed Fund Balance - Departmental Savings to the Capital Budget for Public Works Engineering to fund the City Council Chamber renovations.
