Ordinance to Amend and Reenact the City Code of the City of Hampton, Virginia by Amending Chapter 2, Administration, Article III, Officers and Employees Generally, Sec. 2-113 to Amend the Residency Requirements for Certain City Officers and Employees

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

Currently, the City's Ordinance requires all department heads, in addition to the City Manager, City Attorney, Assistant City Managers and Council Appointees, to maintain their principal residence within the city during their tenure in office.  This amendment would provide that only certain department heads have to reside within the City.  Those departments heads will include the chief of police, fire chief, economic development director, and such others as determined by the City Manager.

BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, that Section 2-113, Article III, Chapter 2 of the City Code of the City of Hampton, Virginia be amended to read as follows:

Sec. 2-113. - Residency requirement.

 

The city manager, city attorney, deputy city managers, assistant city managers, council appointees, and certain department heads or equivalents as determined by the city manager, which include but may not be limited to the chief of police, fire chief, and economic development director, shall maintain principal residence within the city during their tenure in such office or employment. When required, this residency requirement shall be met as soon as practical but no later than twelve (12) months subsequent to the commencement of employment in the affected position.
