Motion to accept the donation of camera equipment valued in excess of $14,900.00 from Canon Virginia, Inc. to the Hampton Police Division for its Forensic Unit.

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

In an effort to look for alternative methods of acquiring much needed equipment for the Hampton Police Division, the Division's Forensics Unit made application with the Canon Virginia's Corporate Donation program to acquire new camera equipment.  The equipment is needed to replace current aged and outdated cameras used by the Forensics Unit.  The new cameras will provide Unit members with the latest technology that will enhance their capabilities out in the field at crime scenes, major incidents and other events where the Division may have a need for top quality photographic technology.

 

Section 2-134(a) of the city code provides that gifts to the city of tangible personal property valued at $5,000 or more shall be approved by council, by motion duly recorded in the council minutes before such gifts are deemed to have been accepted by the city.

 

 

Discussion:

 

Canon Virginia's Corporate Donations Committee has approved the Hampton Police Division's application for new camera equipment totaling in excess of $14,900 which includes the following:  four (4) 5D Mark III (JP) Cameras that feature exceptional still image and movie recording capabilities together with four (4) "L" series high quality optics lenses that will provide the Forensics Technicians with photographic and video capabilities beyond what they are able of producing using the current equipment. 

 

Impact:

 

This donation will save the City and the Division in excess of $14,900.00 for having to purchase this equipment new.
