Resolution Changing the Name of the "Youth Violence Prevention Office" to the "Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities"
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
The Youth Violence Prevention Office was created in the FY15 budget to provide dedicated funding and staffing to address the issue of youth violence in Hampton. This work continues and has transitioned and grown to include the creation of opportunities for young people up to the age of twenty-four. These opportunties provide youth with an alternative to make better life choices. The word 'violence' has a negative connotation and may unfairly stereotype individuals that are served by the office and may inhibit some youth and families from accessing the resources provided by the office. As such, staff is recommending that City Council adopt a resolution changing the name to "Office of Youth Opportunities."

WHEREAS, in response to some increase in youth crime and violent behaviors, funding was dedicated to address these issues; and
WHEREAS, in the FY15 budget funding was appropriated to create and staff the Youth Violence Prevention Office; and
WHEREAS, the work of this office provides both prevention and intervention strategies to aid young people, up to the age of twenty-four, in making more positive life choices; and
WHEREAS, the word 'violence' has a negative connotation and may unfairly stereotype individuals that are served by the office and may inhibit some youth and families from accessing the resources provided.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Youth Violence Prevention Office be, and hereby is, renamed to the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities.
