Ordinance to Set the Salaries for the Mayor and Members of City Council Pursuant to Virginia Code Section 15.2-1414.6
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
By State Code, the annual salaries of the Mayor and members of City Council were capped at $25,000.00 and $23,000.00 respectively by the General Assembly, however during the 2024 session the General Assembly amended Virginia Code Section 15.2-1414.6 (B) and increased the maximum amount to $47,000.00 and $43,000.00 respectively. By non-coded ordinance 836, which was enacted on June 12, 1996, the Mayor's salary was set at $19,000 and the members of City Council's salaries were set at $17,000. Non-coded ordinance 836, is being amended and reenacted to reflect the increased salaries detailed above.

Council is being asked to amend and reenact this non-coded ordinance which will set the salary for the Mayor at $47,000.00 per year and members of City Council Member at $43,000.00 per year, pursuant to Virginia Code Section 15.2-1414.6 (B). As provided in Virginia Code Section 15.2-1414.6(D), the increased salaries for the Mayor and members of City Council will take effect on July 1, 2025.

BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, that the salaries for the Mayor and members of the City Council shall be increased as follows effective July 1, 2025:
Mayor $47,000
Council $43,000
The salaries for the Mayor and members of City Council shall be increased in each succeeding Fiscal Year in the same percentage as the general wage increase approved for permanent full-time City employees, provided, however, that such increase does not exceed the ceilings established by Virginia Code Section 15.2-1414.6(C). The Council shall approve the increase in salaries as a part of its adoption of the annual Appropriation Ordinance pursuant to the City Charter.
This ordinance shall take effect on and after July 1, 2024.
