Title
Motion to Approve and Adopt a Formal Municipal Naming Policy
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
The City of Hampton recognizes that naming public facilities and spaces carries historical, cultural, civic, and operational significance. Names should strengthen community identity, support public safety, honor Hampton’s history and values, and reflect the City’s role as a center of innovation, resilience, military service, maritime heritage, and educational advancement. This policy establishes a consistent process and criteria for naming and renaming City-owned facilities, streets, parks, trails, buildings, and other municipal assets.
Discussion:
This formal policy outlines the process of naming City-owned facilities and properties, and is advisable in order to promote fairness, and efficiency. It streamlines the naming procedure for municipal properties, as well as standardizes it -- thus instilling impartiality into the process. The nominal application fee for citizen-initiated requests will help offset the costs of processing the requests.
Impact:
This policy supports City's Placemaking Strategic Priority by codifying the creation of authentic places that reflect and celebrate the unique cultural identity, history, and character of our community, as well as fostering civic pride, and social connection. It assists in the provision of an environment where public spaces help define our community's cultural tapestry.
