Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
Dr. Helen Rountree, a longtime patron of the Hampton Public Library ("the Library"), was working with staff in the Library's Special Collections Department. In recognition of the need for new equipment, Dr. Rountree would like to donate $12,000 to the Library to be used for the purchase of a new microfilm reader, which customers will be able to use well into the future.

Pursuant to City Code Section 2-134(a), monetary gifts over $5,000, as aggregated or as a whole, require approval and appropriation by City Council. The action presented to City Council, by way of this resolution, requests the acceptance and appropriation of Dr. Rountree's donation of $12,000 for the purchase of new microfilm equipment for the Public Library's Special Collections/Virginiana Room.

Impact:
This gift will provide a modern microfilm reader for customers to have access to historical documents, newspapers, and photos that are not available in any other format.

WHEREAS, Dr. Helen Rountree, a longtime patron of the Hampton Public Library ("the Library"), recognized the need for new equipment in the Library's Special Collections Department;

WHEREAS, Dr. Helen Rountree generously donated $12,000 for the purchase of new microfilm equipment for the Library's Special Collections/Virginiana Room; and

WHEREAS, new equipment will allow customers to have access to historical documents, newspapers, and photos that are not available in any other format.
