Title
Public Art
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
In an effort to celebrate Hampton and encourage citizens and visitors to love where they live, the Placemaking Committee has been working to identify a way to facilitate public art in our community. To accomplish this objective, the Committee proposes a Call for Artists to add artistic installations in public spaces. Installations, or artworks, are part of Hampton's 'Love Your City' and placemaking initiatives and should be specifically designed to respond to their location. Installations may take a variety of formats and should be interactive and engaging.
Discussion:
The Placemaking Committee desires to open the Call for Artists to all ages and professional levels. Artists may design for one (or more) of six identified locations in Hampton's public spaces. Artistic installations should be sized and scaled appropriately for their selected location. Submittals will be scored on connection to place/site specificity, level of engagement, scale, creativity, feasibility (fabrication, ability to endure elements, etc.), and artist experience.
Impact:
Installations resulting from this Call for Artists will be funded from the 'Expanding & Enhancing Public Art' Strategic Priority Funding allocated in Fiscal Year 2015. A total of $24,000 of the funds previously set aside would be utilized.
Recommendation:
Rec
Recieve Council feedback and direction on moving forward with a Call for Artists.
