Resolution Correcting Resolution #18-0170 in Recognition of Councilman Will Moffett.

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

Councilman Will Moffett was recognized by City Council on the occasion of his last meeting (June 27, 2018).  The resolution had incorrect information in terms of the number of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  This resolution corrects that information.

Body

WHEREAS, Councilman Will Moffett has been a resident of Hampton, Virginia, for more than 40 years;

 

WHEREAS, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from the North Carolina College of Theology;

 

WHEREAS, he is a United States Air Force veteran, and retired after 31 years of service with the Department of the Army, where he served as Visual Information Manager and retired as the Director of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security;

 

WHEREAS, over the years, he served on several citizen committees, including Chair of the Hampton Neighborhood Commission; Vice-Chair of the Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority; Co-Chair of the Hampton 400th Anniversary Committee; President of the Volunteer Center of the Virginia Peninsula; Member of Hampton’s Unity Commission; National Points of Light Foundation (Neighboring Task Force); and as a member of the board of directors of numerous non-profit organizations;

 

WHEREAS, he was one of three Hampton representatives invited to the White House in Washington, D.C., to accept the prestigious All-America City Award and was one of two Hampton representatives invited to Berlin, Germany, to participate in the Reinhard Mohn Prize symposium on civic engagement, entitled “Revitalizing Democracy through Participation”;

 

WHEREAS, Councilman Moffett is well-known for being instrumental in establishing the Y. H. Thomas Neighborhood Center in Hampton, a unique community empowerment model for the country;

 

WHEREAS, in 2010, he was elected to the Hampton City Council and was re-elected in 2014;

 

WHEREAS, Councilman Moffett serves as the Hampton City Council Liaison to the Transportation District Commission of Hampton Roads; FEMA Emergency Food and Shelter Program; Hampton Military Affairs Committee; Hampton Military History Foundation; Hampton Roads Community Action Program (HRCAP); 2019 Commemorative Commission; Citizens' Engagement Advisory Review Commission; Peninsula Public Sports Facility Authority; and as Delegate to the Virginia Municipal League and National League of Cities;

 

WHEREAS, he also served on the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission; Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (alternate); National Aeronautics Support Team; Hampton Federal Area Development Authority; MLK & Distinguished Citizen Commemorative Committee; and Hampton United Youth Violence Prevention Work Group;

 

WHEREAS, the Hampton City Council recognized Councilman Moffett with the Hampton Distinguished Citizen Award for his leadership as Co-Chair of the 400th Anniversary Committee;

 

WHEREAS, additional awards received by Councilman Moffett include the Conference of Minority Public Administrators Hampton Roads Outstanding Leaders Award and Distinguished Public Service Award; Omega Psi Phi Citizen of the Year Award; Kappa Alpha Psi Community Service Award; Peninsula Sports Club Special Achievement Award; Volunteer Center Jean K. Walker Community Service Award; and the HRHA Oswald A. Harris Award;

 

WHEREAS, Councilman Moffett is married to Theresa Mahone-Moffett; and

 

WHEREAS, they are blessed with three children, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

 

  NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, that Councilman Will Moffett be, and hereby is, recognized and commended for his commitment to the Hampton City Council and the citizens of the City of Hampton.

 

 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the July 11, 2018, City Council meeting of the City of Hampton, Virginia, and that an appropriate copy be signed by the Mayor, attested by the Clerk, and presented to Will Moffett.
