Briefing on Code Enforcement

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

The Property Maintenance and Zoning Enforcement Division is tasked with enforcing the Codes that protect the health, safety, and welfare of Hampton's citizens. However, many people are unaware of what this division can actually enforce, as well as the lengthy timeline that sometimes accompanies resolving a violation. Other departments including Public Works and Police deal with enforcement issues as well, and this presentation touches on solid waste services and parking enforcement. This presentation is meant to help the Council and the public better understand the role of these divisions as well as the challenges that exist in resolving compliance issues in a timely manner. The presentation also describes the future Codes Academy, which will allow individal citizens to be trained as volunteer code inspectors.
