Ordinance to Amend and Reenact the City Code of the City of Hampton, Virginia by Amending Chapter 14, Fire Prevention and Protection, Article I Entitled, “In General” Pertaining to Volunteer Fire Companies and Volunteer Rescue Squads
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
Council is requested to enact this Ordinance in order to ensure that the City's Volunteer Fire Companies and Rescue Squads are recognized pursuant to the requirements of the Virginia Line of Duty Act.
Discussion:
The Line of Duty Act, as amended during the 2016 General Assembly, provides that employees of volunteer fire companies and rescue squads are covered employees provided that the locality has by ordinance or resolution recognized such fire company or rescue squad as an integral part of the official safety program of such locality. Approval of this ordinance is requested so that the City's Volunteer Fire Companies and Rescue Squads continue to enjoy the benefits of the Line of Duty Act.

BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia, that Sections 14-6 of Article I, Chapter 14 of the City Code of the City of Hampton, Virginia be amended to read as follows:
Chapter 14 - FIRE PREVENTION AND PROTECTION
ARTICLE I. - IN GENERAL

Sec. 14-6. - Volunteer fire companies and volunteer rescue squads designated as part of city’s official safety program.
The active members of the Hampton volunteer fire company, Phoebus volunteer fire company, Wythe volunteer fire company, Buckroe volunteer fire company, Fox Hill volunteer fire company, Northampton volunteer fire company, Phoebus volunteer rescue squad, Wythe volunteer rescue squad, Buckroe volunteer rescue squad, and Northampton volunteer rescue squad are hereby recognized as an integral part of the official safety program of the city.
