Resolution Approving the City of Hampton, Virginia's Acceptance and Appropriation of Funds for the Hampton Clean City Commission from the Keep America Beautiful Cigarette Litter Prevention Grant Program
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
The Hampton Waterways Restoration Project ("Project"), whose purpose is to make our Hampton waterways more swimmable and fishable, has been working on a cigarette litter intervention program since Winter 2018. The City of Hampton Clean City Commission was awarded a maintenance grant in the amount of $500.00 from the Keep America Beautiful and the acceptance of these funds will assist the Project in purchasing portable ashtrays.
Discussion:
The Project is currently running a pilot program at a busy, cigarette-littered intersection. They would like to further reinforce the message by distributing pocket ashtrays or portable car ashtrays to smokers throughout summer 2018 on targeted days at selected events in the City. The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program Maintenance Grant funds, awarded by Keep America Beautiful, would be utilized for the purchase of approximately 166 pocket ashtrays and 63 car ashtrays. The intervention program has included an initial cleanup and numerous scans to establish a cigarette litter baseline
Impact:
The distribution of the pocket ashtrays or portable car ashtrays will support the Project's purpose by facilitating a reduction in cigarette litter in various sections of the City.
