To approve the resolution in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of The Apprentice School At Newport News Shipbuilding

WHEREAS, the first Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) apprentice, Norwood Jones, graduated from the program on April 4, 1894

WHEREAS, thanks to his success, The Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding was formalized in 1919;

WHEREAS, during the early years, shop training was the only program provided by The Apprentice School;

WHEREAS, The Apprentice School survival and spanning millennia is a testament to the value it provides to the apprentice and the workforce benefit it offers to businesses and industries;

WHEREAS, the apprenticeship has developed from an informal method of learning to a highly effective, structured, instructional system for apprentices, that combines essential academic education and skills training to succeed in demanding careers, while earning compensation for on-the-job training experience;

WHEREAS, The Apprentice School’s academic curriculum includes studies in Mathematics, Physics, Strength of Materials, Drafting, Marine Engineering, Shipbuilding Operations and Technical Communications, among other disciplines, leading to a strong technical education foundation;

WHEREAS, The Apprentice School has been continually recognized locally, regionally, nationally and globally as an extraordinary apprentice program;

WHEREAS, The Apprentice School is a leading example of how apprentice programs have been redesigned to teach a wide array of skilled trades, while offering an educational program rich in academic instruction, craft training, leadership and extracurricular activity;

WHEREAS, approximately 800 young men and women are currently enrolled in apprenticeships provided by The Apprentice School;
