Resolution to Accept the 2019 Department of the Interior/National Park Service Cooperative Agreement Grant Awarded to the City of Hampton, Virginia; to Amend the Fiscal Year 2019 Budget for this Purpose; and to Appropriate those Funds to the Grant Fund

Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

This grant was awarded to the City of Hampton by the United States Department of the Interior/National Park Service to provide funding for the 2019 Commemoration recognizing the 400th anniversary of the first African landing in English North America at Point Comfort, present day site of Fort Monroe.

Discussion:

The City of Hampton has been awarded a 2019 National Park Service Community Partnership Grant in the amount of $95,000. The City will utilize this federal funding to assist in financing the 2019 Commemoration including planning, City Commemoration events, enhancing 2019 experiences in Hampton for residents and visitors to include exhibits and educational programming, educating residents and visitors about Hampton’s historical role as the first African landing site in 1619 at Point Comfort, and driving attendance at the 2019 Commemoration at Fort Monroe on August 23-25, 2019. Approximately fifty percent of the funds will be dedicated to Commemoration events and activities; the other half will be dedicated to Commemoration Legacy Projects.

Impact:

This grant for $95,000 in federal funding does not require a match, cash or in-kind.

WHEREAS, the Department of the Interior/National Park Service has awarded the City of Hampton a 2019 Cooperative Agreement Grant in the amount of $95,000;

WHEREAS, the 2019 Cooperative Agreement Grant requires no local match, cash or in-kind; and

WHEREAS, the grant award covers the period September 2018 through December 2019.
