Title

Briefing on the Final Report of NASA DEVELOP Program

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

NASA DEVELOP is a 10-week program through NASA's Applied Sciences Program that pairs NASA partners, recent graduates, and partner organizations to tackle a problem using NASA Earth observations. Hampton is proud to have partnered with DEVELOP for their summer 2019 session. Our NASA team will present their analysis of Hampton's urban tree canopy and impervious surface distribution. NASA created these maps using NASA satellite imagery over the past two decades, and compare the results of the entire City to the Newmarket Creek area (the current area of study and work for Resilient Hampton). However, the team provided staff with tutorial information that would allow staff to run similar analysis in other watersheds and neighborhoods of the City. The information provided by this team will be useful in determining future project locations, and areas of immediate for tree canopy enhancement and impervious surface reduction.

The NASA team also put together a project video to share with council.
