Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
The Department of Health and Human Services awarded a sub-grant award, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), reference as the Employment for TANF Participants to the Virginia Department of Social Services. The grant provides Federal funds to permit proven service approaches and strategies that help current and former participants of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and those citizens with incomes at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) with a child, prepare to enter into and maintain employment, with the prospective of a career path and wage growth. The grant award will also help working families and individuals who earn more than the official Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living. Those households live paycheck to paycheck and are known as the Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (ALICE).

The Hampton Department of Social Services will implement this initiative, with the TANF Assessment and Planning Team. A team that proposes a service delivery approach that will address the need to integrate services and disciplines throughout the community, to assess and address barriers to economic stability and mobility, so the number of households at or below the poverty line will be reduced.

This grant will provide resources to expand and enhance existing service delivery efforts that address more fully the needs of the targeted population.
