Title
Briefing on Proposal to Rename the Hampton Portion of Magruder Boulevard as Neil Armstrong Way in Honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo Mission
Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
Earlier this year, Council was approached with the idea of renaming Hampton’s portion of Magruder Boulevard as Neil Armstrong Way in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo Mission. Initially it was believed that the Hampton Council could not take this action independent of the Virginia Commonwealth Transportation Board; therefore, the idea did not immediately advance. Since that time, VDOT has clarified that the Council can rename the Hampton portion of the road. Mayor Tuck discussed the idea at his November Town Hall meeting, and found favorable responses. This briefing will discuss next steps should Council wish to proceed with the renaming proposal. It is expected that any renaming would be ceremonial only for a period of time (1-2 years) to minimize impact to businesses and residences located on the road, after which the permanent name change would be finalized. If Council wishes to proceed, a resolution would be brought forth in January at which time public comment and a vote would be taken.
