Resolution Approving the City of Hampton, Virginia's Participation in and Appropriation of the FY16 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant through the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs

Purpose
PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:
The FY16 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant is provided by the Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs. The proceeds from this grant will be used to purchase equipment and fund training in support of the Police Division’s efforts to further embrace the White House Recommendations for 21st Century Policing. Equipment purchases will include a utility task vehicle for community events and an unmanned aerial vehicle used for community engagement projects. Funds for training will allow for the Police Division's personnel to attend the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference to share ideas and learn about new techniques and strategies to better serve the citizens of Hampton.

Discussion:
The community benefits from this project by providing police officers with equipment that facilitates greater interaction with the community through patrols and presence at special events as well as information sharing through social media.

Impact:
The citizens of Hampton will enjoy a higher level of interaction with their police officers and have better information available about the operations of the Police Division. There are no matching costs for this grant.
