Resolution to Amend the Fiscal Year 2022 Council Approved Budget to Accept and Appropriate the 2021 Youth and Gang Violence Community Assessment Program Grant awarded by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services

 

Purpose

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND:

The Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) has awarded the City of Hampton Youth and Young Adult Opportunities Office grant funding in the amount of $25,000.00 in state funds with no local match required, in support of the City of Hampton (the "City") Youth and Gang Violence Community Assessment Program.

 

Discussion:

The grant provides funding to complete a community-based assessment of the scope, root causes and effects of youth and gang violence in order to better design prevention and intervention services moving forward. The key component of the proposed assessment is the involvement of community-based organizations and individuals perceived by the community as credible messengers in both the formulation and implementation of the assessment plan.

 

Impact:

The City has been awarded a total of $25,000.00 in state funds with no local match required.   Grant proceeds will be used by the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities Office to continue to complete a community-based assessment of the scope, root causes and effects of youth and gang violence in order to better design prevention and intervention services moving forward.  The key component will be the involvement of community-based organizations and individuals perceived by the community as credible messengers in both the formulation and implementation of the assessment plan.

                     WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services has awarded the City of Hampton, Virginia (the “City”) the 2021 Youth and Gang Violence Community Assessment Program Grant in the amount of $25,000.00 in state funding; 

 

                     WHEREAS, the 2021 Youth and Gang Violence Community Assessment Program Grant award requires no local match; 

 

                     WHEREAS, the 2021 Youth and Gang Violence Community Assessment Program Grant award totals $25,000.00 and will be used by the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities to complete a community-based assessment of the scope, root causes and effects of youth and gang violence in order to better design prevention and intervention services moving forward; and

 

                     WHEREAS, the grant award covers the period July 1, 2021 through December 31, 2021. 

 

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Hampton, Virginia hereby amends its Fiscal Year 2022 Council Approved Budget to accept and appropriate the 2021 Youth and Gang Violence Assessment Program Grant award in the amount of $25,000.00, and any supplemental funding, from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services to the Grant Fund to be used by the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities to complete a community-based assessment of the scope, root causes and effects of youth and gang violence in order to better design prevention and intervention services moving forward, in accordance with the grant agreement. 

 

                     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council authorizes the City Manager, or her designee, to take any and all actions necessary to implement this grant award.
